WOLVSERPENT - Blood Seed LP review

WOLVSERPENT - Blood Seed LP
20 Buck Spin
Genre: Doom
Rating: 3/5

When a band puts out a two song release they're either uber experimental drone maniacs onto something intriguing or false doom hippies who just don't no when to stop. This two piece from Boise, Idaho, who previously went under the name PUSSYGUTT fall somewhere in between. Blood Seed came out during the Fall of last year and I don't know how I missed it. There was a glut of other two song Doom releases in 2010. I'm kidding of course. I'm also surprised that I didn't see their name mentioned anywhere in the hipster realm since there's a woman in the band. Yes it's become cliche that if there's a woman either singing or playing bass the hipster crowd takes notice and invokes fascination. To her credit Brittany McConnell is neither and in fact is the drummer/percussionist and violinist in WOLVSERPENT. To be honest with ya it's her violin work on here that pushes this one into the extraordinary file. Blake Green is the other half and adds the tripped out vocals and crushing guitar. You put that all together and it makes a foreboding almost gothic sound quality that grips you. The two compositions on here, “Wolv” and “Serpent”, are like dark storms approaching from the West. Wind spirits riding the gale forces and cranking Iomni inspired riffs. Hearing McConnell's haunting violin playing won me over easily. This might be too scary for coffee house worms to connect with which means it's decent in my book of horrors.
