MOURNFUL CONGREGATION - The Book Of Kings CD review

MOURNFUL CONGREGATION - The Book Of Kings CD
Weird Truth Productions/20 Buck Spin
Genre: Funeral Doom
Rating: 4/5

I first heard this Australian band on Crestfallen's radio podcast earlier this month. The show's host, Kevin, only played one cut off the release that being "The Waterless Streams" but it was enough. MOURNFUL CONGREGATION are similar to Sweden's ISOLE in that their style is sssslllloooowwww!!!! How slow you ask? The band has trouble playing outdoor gigs because birds land on them. For some people that sounds depressing but for funeral doom fanatics it's a gold star. MOURNFUL CONGREGATION have been dragging doom ass since the mid-90s and The Book Of Kings is their fourth release. I'm sure funeral doom fans are es tactic (whatever that looks like) but for me listening to this is as miserable as waiting for a bus. Not that there's anything wrong with it of course. Funeral Doom is supposed to invoke feelings of isolation and sadness (wow, there's two words that describe hipster reality). If it was upbeat than it would be goth and trust me it ain't. The Book Of Kings is four suffering long cuts of misery. The title cut being the real pain monger at over thirty minutes in length. By the time that cut was over I felt like I was at the bottom of the ditch waiting for the bullet. Yes I joke about it but in all honesty the fans of this type of doom will eat this release up. They'll even listen to The Book Of Kings while in the fetal position underneath their beds which I'm told is a sign of appreciation.
